Student Schedule
Company: Kaplan Test Prep
Role: UX/UI Designer
UX Strategy, Interaction Design, Visual Design, Prototyping, Unmoderated User Research
Overview
During my time at Kaplan, I was the lead UX/UI designer of a standardized courseware experience that could be used across all online Kaplan courses. The goal was to create a user-friendly, accessible product that featured a schedule on the homepage, as well as an activity library, question bank for practice quizzes, flashcards, and more.
The schedule can be personalized by the student to fit with their daily life and test plans. Assigned activities, live classes, and workshops are accessible directly from the schedule and the student’s assignment progress is displayed at the top. If the student falls behind in their assigned work, they can recalibrate their plan at any time and move incomplete work forward.
The standardized experience was launched to students studying for the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) in October 2021 and PE (Professional Engineer) courses in April 2022.

The Problem
How might we tell students what they should study each day to help them prepare for their exam?
Kaplan course structure before the redesign
Approach
Discovery

Partnered with the learning science and analytics teams to identify student learning needs, leveraging insights from customer data and educational research
-
Lead a competitive analysis to evaluate how similar products prescribe study plans to students, identifying key strengths as well as gaps in the market
-
Conducted user interviews and a MaxDiff survey to prioritize features based on their perceived importance to Kaplan users, balancing the insights with business objectives to guide the product strategy

-
Collaborated with engineering stakeholders to evaluate feasibility and ensure alignment before concept testing the ideas with students
